There was a time (my grandfather days) when, they lived in a village where when a car passed by, people used to awe at it. A well off family could bare a two wheeler and a house; the house was built with bricks unpainted, pillars with mud and the kitchen fire was from burning wood. I have seen people still live like this in the remotest places like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Northern India. (A place one must visit in a lifetime). The houses have adapted to the environment and their cultures and being hood. One must sit down on the mat to eat with a dwarf table. The kitchen bared the muddy cold feeling and once you entered it, the copper utensils would stare at you openly. Of course, that feeling today is quite different since most population live in a very different houses built baring Asian Paints, glass windows, shelves and wooden cupboards and bath tubs.
Let us look at people living in the metropolitan and average well developed cities who own a comfortable 2 floor flat or a bungalow. These are basically cubical rooms, wired electricity, wooden furniture and cupboards. Think of the typical applicances owned by these people
These are the very typical stuff anyone or everyone living in a city owns. Can you see the dependency? They kind of products the market sells you, the architecture of your house adapts to it to make it fit in the house. Since you have a TV, you own a 3 foot long table to keep the television and music system. You have a big space in the kitchen to fit the fridge in next to the stove. A Computer Desk to keep your Desktop and keyboard. A full cupboard to keep your books, comics and magazines. Switch boards on the wall at convenient locations to trigger these appliances.
Now let's move 10 years ahead of this life i.e. today. We have solar panels installed almost at every 3rd house which reduces wiring and dependency on the municipality electricity board as well as money in the long run. People own laptops and ipads. There are plasma thin Television sets which can be hanged on the wall. There are censor lights which don't even require switch boards. You don't need to maintain a calendar for dates since you can manage that on your htc mobile. Think about it, and now visualise your room, with no special table for a Computer Desktop, you can keep your ipad below your bed pillow. You don't need a special book shelf since you have a Kindle. You don't need a 3 foot long table occupying 1/4th your room to hold the television, simply hang it. You don't need ugly looking Anchor switches on your wall since you have a remote for turning on/off fan and lights or maybe they are intelligently censored. Can you imagine how your room would be? Maybe for all that extra space you can put up an auctioned paiting on the wall or maybe keep a vase on the corner of that room where there used to be a computer table. Thanks to Bose for the ultra-amazing wireless sound system experience so you don't need special glass build things to hold your music system. (They are just kickass). You have an airconditioned room with intelligent heating and temprature cooling so you can hang a light or maybe a scary dead cat's head where there was once a cieling fan. No bookshelves that ate only dust, thanks to Jeff Bezos for Kindle. No more naked wire hanging behind the computer desks or behind the television sets or antennas. The kitchen would probably be the same but with more organized tools like oven and microwave combo which reduces half the space. Maybe you have a special system installed for waste and garbage management attached to your garden soil which reduces man power for gardening + you are going green. Maybe you have a system installed for recycling of the water you use daily (saves a lot of water). Maybe there are automatic temperature controlled boxes where you can keep chocolates, bread or fruits which don't ripe faster so you don't need to store them in some other place. Your room is more spacious, free better looking.
All these things are possible in today's world, think about it. Maybe you might want to get organized and think about before building your own house and think about what things you might want to buy before re-decorading your house. Go Green-er.
